Thousands of adults, teens, and children from across Western Massachusetts have come to Northampton Karate to learn the traditional Okinawan Matsubayashi style of Shorin-ryu karate since its founding in 1988.
Our students learn martial arts techniques, self-defense, and physical discipline through kata (forms) as well as partner work including kumite (sparring).
The founder of Shorin-ryu believed that cultivating the mind was as important as physical training, so we emphasize deep focus and mindfulness in our practice.
We welcome all genders, experience levels and fitness levels. Karate can be enjoyed for a lifetime!
We are excited to be making a return to First Night after many years and invite audiences to join us for a demonstration (with some audience participation!) of this beautiful and functional martial art.
